Students must be members of Chapter 8 and also members of the Charles River Museum of Industry and Industry at whose location the workshop will be held.
Course Title: Introduction to Mechanical Watches: Understanding, Handling, and Basic Servicing
Course Description: This beginner-level course introduces students to the principles of mechanical watch operation, identification of key components, safe handling practices, basic disassembly and assembly procedures, and fundamental maintenance techniques. No prior watchmaking experience is required.
Course Duration: 4-6 hours possibly 8 if required
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explain how a mechanical watch functions.
2. Identify major movement components and their purposes.
3. Safely use basic watchmaking tools.
4. Disassemble and reassemble a simple mechanical movement.
5. Perform basic inspection and troubleshooting.
6. Understand lubrication principles and maintenance requirements.
7. Follow proper workshop safety and handling procedures.
Class size: No less than five nor more than eight participants
Tools, supplies, and movements: We will provide all needed hand tools including loupe, tweezers, screwdrivers, plastic pick, movement rest, portable bench with LED lamp, parts tray, and 16 ½ ligne open face Swiss style pocket watch movement.
