Presentations
Jack Kurdzionak: "Change is Inevitable, but it can be Painful” & “Watchmaking in 2025 and Beyond"
Using the example of a watchmaker he knew in the years before he retired in the early 1980's, Jack will discuss the changes seen in the watchmaking business from the end of WW2 to the current time. Jack will provide his vision of where the industry will be in the future.
Jack has served as president of the Massachusetts Watchmaker/Clockmakers Association and president, secretary, vice president and treasurer of the American Watchmakers Clockmakers Institute. In 1987, Jack opened a full-time watch and clock repair shop, the Watchmaker, in downtown Stoneham, MA, which is still in business and operated by his son. He gradually phased out of clock repair to concentrate full time on the repair of watches. In the late 1990's Jack and his wife, Terry, purchased a small battery distribution business which she renamed Eckcells. Since that time the business has grown into a full-service watch material dealership and service center.
Phil D'Avanza: "E Howard, Ham and Frost, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Ships Bells"
Phil will guide us through the rebuilding of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Ships Bells from the new guilded hands, numerals, and hour marks, through the motion works, shafts, and bearings of this 146-year-old ships bell.
Philip D’Avanza has been in the clock repair business for over forty years. Since 1990, he has focused on tower clock repair in historic structures and is thoroughly familiar with the guidelines for rehabilitating historic buildings established by the Secretary of the Interior. In the repair of historic timepieces, it is of the utmost importance to make the repair with the same skill and craftsmanship used when the mechanism was originally manufactured. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, metallurgy, strength of materials and heat treatment play an important role in the restoration and repair of quality timepieces.
Philip D'Avanza is a proud member of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute, The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, NAWCC Chapter 8, and is the current president of Granite State Timekeepers Chapter 189.
