Presentations

David Hagberg will talk about "
SERVICING THE SETH THOMAS #124 CHIME CLOCK."  Chime clocks are an interesting part of horology but are often considered the bane of clock repair people.  That said, Seth Thomas #124 chiming mantel clocks can be serviced and they will work reliably.  David will present a slideshow and describe several methods for reducing frustration, backtracking and callbacks.   Many of these tricks also apply to the common Seth Thomas time and strike round movements.  Even if you have sworn off chime clocks forever, David will still send you home with some useful information!

David was born into the clock world and learned the craft at his father's knee.  Kenneth Hagberg cut his teeth as a teenager working for the jeweler Gus Lahde, later for Brad Cheney, and ultimately for Simplex Time Recorder.  David did a long stint at Bradford W. Cheney & Son in Worcester and then went on to other things.  When his son Andy came of age and expressed an interest in clocks, it all came back.  A new clock shop got built, and it's now a busy place.  David offers work to the trade and is a regular contributor to CLOCKS magazine.

Denis Carignan, Carignan Watch Company, Belmont NH, will talk about "MAKING OF A VERGE WATCH BALANCE SHAFT."

From a young age, Denis had always been interested in anything mechanical, taking things apart and putting things back together. As a young adult, he repaired his first watch and contacted a local collector for a crystal. When the collector learned he was able to get the watch running himself and how he did it, the collector encouraged Denis to go into watch repair. So, he did. Denis has been in business since 1996.

Several years ago, he entered college for advanced manufacturing courses and is now teaching CNC Machines I and II classes at the local community college.

Over the years he has amassed a number of machines and tools, both antique and modern. Enough machines, so that any type of repair or service can be done in-house.

In 2016, Denis entered the NAWCC Pritchard contest and won. His entry was about the restoration of a Breitling Laederich pocket watch.

Day in and day out, Denis can be found at his bench or machines working on restoring various kinds of watches.

Registration is open to members and their guests as well as current members of NAWCC who are not members of Chapter 8.
