Noted independent Swiss Watchmaker Philippe Narbel will lead a five-day workshop at the School of Horology in fine horological finishing techniques. Individualized instruction will be provided in these key areas:
Shaping
Use practice pieces to explore the geometry of the 45° angle and parallelism, and inward and outward angles on watch movement parts.
Smoothing and Polishing
Learn the fine art of smoothing, texturing, and polishing with a variety of techniques and materials.
Countersinks
Shape and polishing countersinks on practice pieces, and use steel tools to shape wood for polishing.

For those new to clock repair, the Foundational Repair Skills 1 workshop offers a basic understanding of the most fundamental operations involved in clock repair, restoration, and conservation. For the more advanced participants, this workshop provides a deeper understanding and exposure to different techniques. These skills are essential for success. This workshop will cover the basics of precision measurement using the micrometer and caliper, lathe operations, burnishing/polishing pivots, repivoting, and making and setting bushings. While some may see these skills as not being “basic,” they are at the foundation of all good clockwork. The workshop’s focus is not on the clock repair itself but the skills necessary for it. This workshop addresses horology with a philosophy of sympathetic restoration. “Sympathetic restoration” has been defined as correcting the mechanical and structural failures, while maintaining the physical effects of history and use (i.e., patina, modifications, etc.). As applied to the restoration of clocks, the goal is to restore the clock to its original state while respecting its age and materials.

Willard House & Clock Museum
Join us for the reveal of the Charles N. Grichar Center at Willard House & Clock Museum—a new 10,000 square foot space featuring 80 clock masterworks by the Willard family, Edward Howard of Boston, and fine mechanical watches for the pocket and the wrist. Nearly 400 timekeepers showcased in a state-of-the-art horological space. Meet Mr. Grichar, speak to the museum architect, and enjoy an introduction to our trustees.
